What is the BANDALUM mailing list?

BANDALUM is an e-mail list service mailing list (LISTSERV) for email messages of interest to alumni of the University of Arkansas Razorback Bands. The intent of the list is to allow email notification of Razorback Band Alumni events and also a method for alumni to keep up with each other by posting personal news and information about those major changes in their lives.

This is not a list for sharing off color humour in that many people receive email at their work. Many work sites, especially elementary and secondary schools, have email programs in place which monitor emails for certain words and there have been reports of people being reprimanded when questionable emails that have been sent to their email account without their knowledge.

The list is also not intended for extended one on one conversations via the list. The email addresses for other subscribers can be determined by using the review command, and searching through the list for a friend's address. The review access is only available to subscribers of the list and all subscriber request must be approved by the list owner. These steps are necessary in order to prevent the addresses to be harvested for spamming.

To use this service you might want think of this mailing list as having two mailboxes that can be accessed by e-mail. One is administrative and the other is functional.

The first one can be likened to a regular post office, with its own address. In this case it happens to be LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU --- This is where you do business to Subscribe, to Signoff (un-subscribe), or send other requests/commands. You can do some other business at the 'post office' but details on how to get that information is described in more detail below.

The second mailbox can be thought of as a service address where you can send mail which you want to distribute to everyone who is currently subscribed. This address is BANDALUM@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU -- This is where you post your e-mail which will be re-sent to everyone on the BANDALUM list.

How do I sign up and subscribe? How do I un-subscribe?

You may be added to or unsubbed from list at any time by sending a request or command to the "LIST SERVER address".

As mentioned above this is like going to a post office, and requesting them to update your home address for all of your mail. The LIST SERVER address is: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU To get added to the list you send an e-mail that has nothing more than the command to subscribe to the specific list in the body of your e-mail message. The text of your e-mail should be as follows:

SUBSCRIBE BANDALUM [your first name] [your last name]

A computer program called LISTSERV (LIST SERVer) will process your e-mail and any command you include. You do NOT put your e-mail address in the body of the e-mail because the LISTSERV will use your "Return address" for that.

To be removed from the list, send a one line e-mail message to this same address with one line in the body of the e-mail as follows:

SIGNOFF BANDALUM
Once again, you don't have to supply your email address because LISTSERV will know which address to unsubcribe according to your "Return address".

How do I find out who else is subscribed to the list?

To determine addresses of other people who are subscribed to the list you can send a review request or command to the "LIST SERVER address".

As mentioned above this is like going to a post office, and requesting them for a list of addreses that exist on a mailing list. The LIST SERVER address is: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU To have the list of subscribers sent to you, The text of your e-mail should be as follows:

REVIEW BANDALUM
An email will be returned to you that will contain the header of the list as well as the list of recipients.

What are some more information on Commands that LISTSERV can do?

You can also tell LISTSERV to set different settings for your email address in relation to the messages from the BANDALUM list.

For example, you can tell it how you want it to confirm the receipt of messages you send to the list. If you do not trust the system, send a "SET BANDALUM REPRO" command and LISTSERV will send you a copy of your own messages, so that you can see that the message was distributed and did not get damaged on the way. After a while you may find that this is getting annoying, especially if your mail program does not tell you that the message is from you when it informs you that new mail has arrived from BANDALUM. If you send a "SET BANDALUM ACK NOREPRO" command, LISTSERV will mail you a short acknowledgement instead, which will look different in your mailbox directory. With most mail programs you will know immediately that this is an acknowledgement you can read later.

You can turn off acknowledgements completely with "SET BANDALUM NOACK NOREPRO".

Contributions sent to this list are automatically archived. You can get a list of the available archive files by sending an "INDEX BANDALUM" command.

You can then order these files with a "GET BANDALUM LOGxxxx" command, or using LISTSERV's database search facilities. Send an "INFO DATABASE" command for more information on the latter.

Please note that it is presently possible for anybody to determine that you are signed up to the list through the use of the "REVIEW" command, which returns the e-mail address and name of all the subscribers. If you do not want your name to be visible, just issue a "SET BANDALUM CONCEAL" command.

More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the LISTSERV reference card, which you can retrieve by sending an "INFO REFCARD" command.

Remember, this is very important, ALL commands are placed in the body of an e-mail, without the quote marks ("), to the address: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU

How do I post a message to the BANDALUM mailing list?

Create your message with your regular e-mail program and then send the e-mail to the BANDALUM mailing list address, also known as the list address.

The address for the BANDALUM is BANDALUM@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU
When you do this, your e-mail will be distributed to all the people who are currently subscribed to the list.

This process is called "sending mail to the list", or more specifically, sending mail to BANDALUM. List Server software does the work for you.

Caution: Use the correct address for your intended purpose.

Only e-mail that should be distributed to everyone on the list should be sent to the BANDALUM address.

The "mailing list address" is like a group of individual persons' home addresses or in terms of a FAX, a group FAX number. If you send a letter or FAX to the wrong address or number, not only will it NOT be handled properly, but it will irritate a lot of people. Remember: the address for the BANDALUM mailing list, which is where you send your messages to all people on the mailing list, is BANDALUM@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU

Requests for subscribing to the BANDALUM mailing list, un-subscribing to the BANDALUM mailing list, or for other administrative work should never be sent to the address of the BANDALUM mailing list, or list address, because the request would be distributed to all of the people who are subscribed to the mailing list rather than being processed as a command request. It is just as annoying as sending a FAX to someone's regular voice phone number. It is an unpleasant experience when the person picks up the phone. This might be excused the first time, but not if you do it regularly. It is the same with mailing lists, with the difference that you are calling dozens of people at the same time, so a lot more people get annoyed if you use the wrong address (number).

All requests, or commands, for subscribing, un-subscribing, etc., must be sent to the "LIST SERVICE address", which is similar to the administrator address, or the postmaster address. The "LIST SERVICE address is:
LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU

The "LISTSERV address" is like the address of a post office. This is where you send all requests, or commands. The commands go in the body of the e-mail. The List Server will parse and process the commands.

You cannot send e-mail to the "List Service address" which is intended for mailing list subscribers. If you send a letter intended for a friend to the post office's street address, your intended recipient won't recieve the letter, because the post office won't know what to do with it. Therefore, don't send e-mail with your messages to this address. The software won't know what to do with them.

In summary:
The mailing list address, or BANDALUM address is: BANDALUM@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU

The List Server address is: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UARK.EDU
